Characins originate in South America and Africa. They are a very suitable fish for most any aquarium, and their sizes vary widely. Tetras are probably the most famous of this family, Neon Tetras are always popular. A hearty and beautiful little tropical fish. Also the Piranha, another very popular fish that is not nearly as peaceful or beautiful.
